Science Thread

At Sallyh's request, a science thread.
not to be used for irrational, political or otherwise unsound discourse...

The topic of statistics has been mentioned previously, so I'll pitch in on this. I usually joke that as a banker, all the math I need is to understand what a percentage is. But it is not a joke - it is terrifying how few people unerstand percentages, and thus statistics, which are VERY counterintuitive. (As a test, try to ask people what the difference is between "20% of the unemployed are under 25" and "20% of the under 25 are unemployed").
