I'd like to resume discussion about the vision problems current with the real-life space program as a new topic so as to split it off from the discussion of Soderbergh's film that was begun in the topic about Lem's story with elements of Tarkovsky's film.

Solaris = Gaia?

Hi everyone. This is a great site! I saw the Solaris trailer a couple of weeks ago with Minority Report (an exceptional film). Seeing it inspired me to look up websites for Solaris. I have seen sites before but this is the first time I found this one. I liked the trailer. I read last year about Soderbergh considering filming Solaris. Being impressed with his work thus far I have high hopes. I have read Solaris three or four times. Every time I read the book I feel I am living it and I experience intense emotions that run nearly the whole gamut, except that there is little if any humor in it. I feel desolation, bewilderment, loss, tragedy, loneliness, exaltation, love, joy, awe, and on and on and on.

Kafka and Controversy over the Nature of Art

This is to restart a conversation interrupted on different forum about Kafka's short story "A Country Doctor".

The story:

Doctor stands outside his home in "great perplexity"; his horse died, and he has been summoned to see a critically-ill patient ten miles away. Doctor's maid, Rose, has gone to try to borrow a horse, but he is sure she will not be successful. Doctor kicks the door of an old pigsty, and two horses and Groom squeeze out of the tiny door. Doctor is soon going away into the night, pulled by the huge horses, helplessly watching Groom kicking in the door to the house to rape Rose.
