The computer network here is not properly maintained. It's a small company, so we contract out our IT services, and even then it's only if something goes wrong that we can't figure out how to correct. Most of the time, if nothing is malfunctioning, it gets ignored. We have Norton here, but I doubt if anyone has updated it any time recently, and nobody here feels passionately enough about the office computers to take on the responsibility of maintaining them.
I think it happened when I was searching the internet for information on Charo. (You know, the "coochie coochie" comedienne/actress that appeared on numerous episodes of "Love Boat" and "Hollywood Squares") It is amazingly difficult to find much about her on the web, but I think I accidently stumbled onto a marketing search engine called charro.com that probably infected my computer. Who knows? It could have been anything...
I tried to explain what the debugging program did to remove the questionable software, but Typepad gave me an error message saying that the post had "questionable content". I have no idea what was wrong, but it didn't like something I wrote. The nut of it is that the software removed the bug automatically and just let me hit "OK" to confirm that it had been removed.
These pesky bugs attach themselves to everything that is unprotected these days. I must say the major security risk these days on internet are the small companies like yours or my husband's (although his co. learned already). Fooled by the ease with which they can use complicated machinery they think no or little maintenance is needed. Meanwhile, everybody pays because their server produces spam and viruses. But there is little anyone can do about that.
Some type of "malware". I should have looked to see what it was before I hit the "ok" button. Probably something terrible that is going to eat out my computer to the core and leave a smoking mess of wires.. Either that or it's a spy planted by the red Chinese.
I want to apologize for my lengthy absence. Three main factors: house obligations, obsession with politics, and knee surgery.
#1 is personal and dull. #2 is something we've mostly steered clear of ever since the notorious Iraq thread on Channel 1.
So, #3. I had ACL replacement surgery on my left knee on 17 June, following three months of immobilization and subsequent therapy to get the knee to the point where the Dr wanted it. Everything went swimmingly, and in theory I should be good as new in 6 months.
Went to a friend's for "breakfast at Wimbledon" this morning, and now Glimmette has tuned into the Sci-fi channel's Twilight Zone marathon. Nothing like a good dose of paranoia at the hands of the wonderful Mr. Serling!
Yeti, this happened at work? Your IT people don't run virus sweep on the network?
Do you know what malware you caught?
