I thought this deserved a separate topic, don't you?
So I've done some research about other famous Glimmungs born on October 15th and I found out that our Glimmung shares his birthday with:
- Virgil (70-19), the poet who said among other things, "As the twig is bent the tree inclines..."
- Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844 – 08/25/1900) – who needs no introduction, perhaps a quotation then, "In large states, public education will always be mediocre, for the same reason that in large kitchens the cooking is bad."
- C.P. Snow (1905 – 07/01/1980) a writer and physicist who also doesn't need introduction, but he is worth quoting, "When you think of the long and gloomy history of man, you will find more hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have ever been committed in the name of rebellion."
- John Kenneth Galbraith (1908 – ) famous Canadian born US economist, the last American Institutionalist; he is an iconoclast, as he spends a lot of time describing how economic theory doesn't always work in real life, hence there is a wealth of quotes of his, each spectacular, like this one: "It is a far, far better thing to have a firm anchor in nonsense than to put out on the troubled sea of thought." (irony alert!)
- Lee Iacocca (1924 – ); who said many wise things but the wisest was this, We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need?"
- Mark Lenard (1924 - ); Star Trek's Sarek (Spock's dad). Live long and prosper, but he wasn’t the first one to say it... ;^)
I thought these people fit well within "the spectrum of Glimmung," don't you? ;^) If you're curious what else happened on October 15th, the memorable birthday of Glimmung, check this out:
- 1993 - Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Clerk shared the Nobel Peace prize.
- 1988 - during a game against his old team, the Edmonton Oilers, Canadian ice hockey great Wayne Gretsky broke Gordie Howe's National Hockey League career scoring record of 1,850 points.
- 1983 - Genesis went to No.1 on the UK chart with their self titled album Genesis.
- 1968 - Led Zeppelin made their live debut at Surrey University.
- 1964 - Nikita Khrushchev was replaced by Leonid Brezhnev as leader of the Soviet Union. At the time Nikita was on holiday at his Black Sea villa.
- 1953 - (fifty years ago) the production of Teahouse of the August Moon written by John Patrick, opened on Broadway (with Marlon Brando as a Chinese interpreter, yeah, Chinese, as the native speaker, you know slanted eyes and yellow skin, that type of thing) – it immediately became a big hit.
- 1951 – first oral contraceptive was developed by Carl Djerassi
- 1917 - Mata Hari, Dutch dancer and spy for the Germans during World War II (WWII), was executed by firing squad in Paris. 8^(
- 1794 - the first coin minted in the United States was a silver dollar. It was issued on this day in 1794.
- 1783 - Francois Pilatre de Rozier made the first manned flight in a hot air balloon. The first flight was let out to 82 feet, but over the next few days the altitude increased up to 6,500 feet.
- 1582 - the Gregorian (or New World) calendar was adopted in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal; and the preceding ten days were lost to history.
Finally, while looking for some true insight to Glimmung, I came across this page. And then I gave up. Let's face it, omnipotence, even limited, is beyond the comprehension of an average Westerner, kinda like Japanese... ;^)
Happy Birthday Glimmung!
Glimmung,
Here's a funny little something for you:
coolcakes
Have a wonderful day and a fabulous life. Guys like you certainly deserve it! :)
Thank goodness your mom didn't use those newly invented oral contraceptives on the day you were conceived... D:)
I just cannot get out of my head the image of Khrushchev and Brezhnev together on a podium, dressed in those fur hats and heavy coats, so:
Big bearlike, Russian-style hug from me, Glimmung! Happy Birthday!!!

Thanks guys!
Thanks for the hug, Michael - I could feel it all the way out here. :^)
Gryka, I didn't know about C.P. Snow and Mark Lenard! Cool. The Snow quotation is a keeper - thanks for posting it.
Also Arthur M. Schlesinger, P.G. Wodehouse, and Oriole Hall-of-famer (and noted underwear model) Jim Palmer. Italo Calvino and Michael Foucault.
Spain holds the Parade of Giants and Dwarves - that sounds like fun! :^)
This is also Ether Day, and National Grouch Day. Haarrrumph!
Very appropriately, it is National Vegetarian Awareness Month, and Polish American Heritage Month. And National Sarcastic Awareness Month! (Of course for us, every month is NSAM...)
Also, the Month of the Hedgehog... and Domestic Violence Month (not to be confused, apparently, with Domestic Violence Awareness Month or Domestic Violence Prevention Month  )
I'm proud to share the day with Mandela's Nobel Prize - also on this day in 1999 the Peace Prize was given to Doctors Without Borders, whom I have gratefully supported over the years.
And Zeppelin too! Dazed and Confused...
(Gryka, Cubs were up 3-0 when we left the bar last night - guess we should have stayed. I feel responsible...)
Gryka, how did the Japanese find out about my Glimmung ballcap??? Now everyone will be wanting one!

Some falling leaves on your Birthday!
Walk under the trees today,
down those paths strewn with acorns,
feeling nothing but the crisp October air,
the swing of your arms
the company of one (or more) of your feline friends,
Glimmette's smiling breath
and the rhythm of your stepping.
Zen-style hug from here! (Be the hug!)
Happy Birthday!

Thank you, mondrian5... we will easily be able to fill your prescription. :^)
We do indeed have acorns everywhere! We are awash in oaks. And one marvelous red gum, whose brilliant colors intensify my annual bout of homesickness for autumn in the midwest.
Back when we let most of the cats roam loose, we would be accompanied by a furry tide wherever we went. Sadly, only a handful get this privilege now, and only when we're home and can exercise some supervision.
It finally felt like October last night. A chill in the air... cats... spirits... the harvest. Death, and the promise of rebirth. Hints of red and gold in the morning fog. And Ray Bradbury beckons...

"Walk under the trees today,
down those paths strewn with acorns,
feeling nothing but the crisp October air,
the swing of your arms
the company of one (or more) of your feline friends,
...the sight of bigfoot stepping over a log, looking over his shoulder at you and then walking toward a wooded hillside in the distance....
Glimmette's smiling breath
and the rhythm of your stepping."
"Back when we let most of the cats roam loose, we would be accompanied by a furry tide wherever we went, along with the occasional sight of a large foot print along the way, too big to be human. Sadly, only a handful get this privilege now with all the strange noises we seem to hear in the woods."
--On your birthday, you are hereby granted the opportunity to hike in a remote part of the country and take a fuzzy photograph of me.
I'll give you a Yeti hug. (It's okay, nobody will believe it ever happened...)

Wow! It's the National Hedghog Month? I love hedghogs! Especially the African Pygmy ones! They are so CUTE!
Oh, no! I can see Dr. Yeti coming! Have to run, guys!...

"I swear, I saw it! The feet were huge!"
"Sir, how much have you had to drink?"
"Only a quart or two, honest."
"Yeah. OK Fred, another unreliable witness."
"'But... I saw it! it winked at me!"
"Yes, sir. Breathe into this balloon. Now, would you walk this line for me? Over here, sir."
"But.... but... damn it, I swear to hell I saw it!"
"Yes, sir. Of course you did."

He, he! And once you saw the feet what did you do with them? ;^) Cut, cut? ;^)

One thing they forgot about Yeti is that he has a pointed head.
